News reaching ViewPointNigeria indicates that Mr. Pamson Dagyat, the Statistician General of Plateau state and a native of Kuru, Jos South LGA has built and donated a library/information to his community.
The project was said to have been undertaken in 3 phases –with phase “one” of the development being the building of the library structure and phase “two”, the stocking with books and computers. These two initial phases were completed a few weeks ago and the library has since been commissioned by the commissioner of information, Mr. Olivia Dazyem. Final phase of the project i.e., “the landscaping phase” is said to be ongoing and once completed, shall form an important part of the project, by providing open-air seating areas for students to browse the internet via Wifi.
In a chat with ViewPointNigeria correspondent, Pamson Dagyat was asked about his motivation for embarking on such a project –he averred that for as long as he can remember, he had a philosophy to channel at least 33% of his yearly earnings/salary towards the development of his community –as such since when he was employed in 1993, he has embarked on one project or the other. He confirmed that every year, from 1993 – 2005, he would select a classroom in his community and furnish it with desks and study materials as a means of providing a conducive studying environment for pupils. From 2005 to 2013, he changed his focus and started offering scholarships to students from less privileged backgrounds in both secondary and tertiary institutions.
Further explaining his rationale for the project, he said philanthropy and charity have always been at the heart of his living philosophy and that he finds immeasurable joy in assisting his community where possible.
For the library project, Pamson confirmed that the initial idea of setting up a community library was conceived by the Association of Kuru Native Students. And that when they approached him with the idea, he saw their vision as laudable, because of its capacity to empower the community through information dissemination. He therefore agreed to partner with them by financing the project as part of his yearly educational philanthropy projects.
The library has since been named the “Pamson Dagyat Community Library” by the Kuru Students Union. When asked what this community recognition meant to him, Pamson stated that it is a gesture that he does not take lightly and feels immensely humbled that the community has found him worthy of such an accolade. He promised to continue to do more, both in his community and the entire state. And then challenged all-and-sundry to explore ways of giving back to their communities and assisting Government in its quest to deliver value to its citizen –above all, he said “charity begins at home”.
