Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang has called for the extension of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme to two years so as to enable corps members engage in military training. Jang was speaking when he paid a courtesy call to the minister of Youth Development Alhaji Inuwa Abdullahi in Abuja.

The Governor said that one year was too short for the service and urged the authorities to include military training for a year and make the mandatory service two years. He said that youths that pass through the scheme will be useful to the society afterwards. Jang called for an evaluation of the scheme to meet modern needs of the society.

Jang was critical of the norm where young graduates finish the service scheme and had nothing to offer while also calling for proper guardian counselling. The counselling should commence at secondary school to enable students pick right courses at higher institutions. He urged authorities to set up special science and technical schools so as to encourage intending students do more science courses rather than humanities as the enrolment ratio now favours humanities.
