The United Nations (UN) Labour Agency has said that the number of unemployed people worldwide has increased by to 197 million. The year 2012 saw an increase of 4 million and there are expectations of further increase. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), the youths were mostly affected as about 13% of under 24s are said to be unemployed and unemployment was projected to rise 5.1 million in 2013 and a further 3 million in 2014 globally.

The economic recession in the developed countries was said to be responsible for the downturn. About 6% of total workforce globally were without a job in the year 2012 and the report estimated 39 million withdrew from the labour market according to the report – Global Employment Trends 2013. The ILO Director General, Mr Guy Ryder said it was a massive waste of young people’s lives and their talents and also extraordinarily damaging to people and their societies.

More funds should be allocated for vocational training to equip young people to do jobs available according to the report.
