News available to ViewPointNigeria indicates that the President of the National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Ibrahim Khaleel, yesterday, led members of the Union in Plateau State on a protest, campaigning for full autonomy for local governments.
Khaleel, expressed the difficulty his members are facing with the current “no-work no-pay” policy, he used the opportunity to appeal to the Governor Simon Lalong to look into the issue as he had promised.
The President of the Union commended Lalong for the judicious use of the Paris Club refund for the payment of local government staff salaries and pensions, saying such should be emulated by other governors.
Responding, Lalong assured that he would make good his promise on the matter, adding that the commendation would spur him towards providing a better welfare package to the state workforce.
The protesters, who marched through major streets in Jos, visited the state House of Assembly, where the Speaker, Peter Azi, alongside other officials, promised to lobby his colleagues in the North Central Zone to adopt the stance of the Union.
