A feat has been achieved in Plateau as the first ever security watch tower in the country has been constructed at the Yakubu Gowon airport Jos. The watch tower at about 5.1 m high at the runway-28 end was constructed for the Police Counter Terrorism unit (CTU).
The Regional Manager North Central zone of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Pastor Chris Bature said that the tower was constructed in accordance with the directives of the National Security Adviser’s office to assist security personnel keep watch over the runway during flight taking off and landing.

Bature commended the Jos Airport Manager, Mr Jim Opotu and his management team for the project and other developments at the airport. Bature said Opotu is “clever and intelligent”, while calling on other airport managers to emulate him in running the nation’s airports. He said the remodelling of the airport will increase the capacity of the airport to 730 per hour, “general renovation and furnishing of the airport Police post to provide conducive working environment for the Police officers, and the building of canopies at 5.4m high at the access and Apron gates by the Opotu team, and are commendable.”
He added that the renovation of offices, conference room and conveniences of Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS), in addition to the production of sign posts at strategic areas for proper direction of airport users “must have been a result of Opotu’s prudent management of funds released to the airport.” He also list the ogoing projects at the airport which includes construction work on the permanent site of Airport Staff School, five hydrants at various locations to provide water supply in case of an inferno.
Bature while responding promised to continue with the good work at the airport and commended FAAN for ensuring that staff welfare was generally taken care off. He added that staff welfare was currently under review.
