I never wanted to say anything apart from wishing Nigerians a happy democracy day. It’s a wish because our democratic journey is still cradle Yes! we have successfully transferred power from military regime to a democratic leader. Yes! We saw a power play were an opposition leader defeated an incumbent. Someone might be tempted to say we have arrived and so we deserve applause.
Reading messages on social media left me thinking. While some are scoring the present government greatly, others are claiming a total failure. Well that is the beauty of politics. But what I am still worried about is the limited focus on a progressive solution. None is asking questions on the Next generation. Is this kind of democracy we celebrate today an antidote for a progressive society?
The democracy that has turned youths as mere stooges and political thugs, the democracy that is characterized by ethnic jingoism and self-aggrandizement. The democracy that has knit the mouth of its citizenry, the democracy that has turned institutions to pipeline for generational putridness.
My concern at this critical moment is for conscious youths to rise up and protect our infant but paradoxical democracy. Next time we say happy democracy day, let it be indeed a day to remember not only on social media but in the inner chamber of the common man. “The common man is a reflection of a progressive democracy, when you look at them and see something else, then fine an alternate name” Comrade Kings. Anyway, to mark May 29, “HAPPY DEMOCRACY DAY NIGERIA”
