The deafening silence on the Plateau political scene appears to finally be disturbed/rattled, as the build-up of the 2015 gubernatorial elections takes centre stage. Several groups and umbrella bodies have sprung up in the past few weeks with various opinions and arguments for one thing or the other.
On that note, we have just received news that a crop of young Plateau Professionals have formed a group tagged G-17, comprising one member from each of the 17 Local Government Areas of the state -hence aptly named so. The group was formed ahead of the 2015 elections, with the aims of advocating fair politicking, initiating debate about how to address some of pertinent issues currently heating up the polity and bringing clarity to certain burning issues.
The deafening silence on the Plateau political scene appears to finally be disturbed/rattled, as the build-up of the 2015 gubernatorial elections takes centre stage. Several groups and umbrella bodies have sprung up in the past few weeks with various opinions and arguments about the present political equation.
On that note, we have just received news that a crop of young Plateau Professionals have formed a group tagged G-17, comprising one member from each of the 17 Local Government Areas of the state -hence aptly named so. The group was formed ahead of the 2015 elections, with the aims of advocating fair politicking, initiating dailogue about how to address some of pertinent issues currently heating up the polity and bringing clarity to certain pressing matters in our public discourse.
In a discussion with a leading representatives of the group, the rep confirmed that as individuals, they keenly watched developments in the Plateau political scene and seeing how things were degenerating along ethnic and tribal lines, decided to form a forum, which would foster unity, pride and a sense of belonging amongst Plateau people.
As such, he said, the group has lodged a counter petition at the Plateau State House of Assembly, about a previous petition submitted by an anonymous group called The Plateau Patriotic Front (PPF), accusing Plateau State Government of financial impropriety. He stated that the petition would serve as a rejoinder to the initial petition and serve to achieve the following aims:
– Unmask the true identities of the Plateau Patriotic Front and its allies/sponsors
– Provide more clarity on the prudent use of SURE-P funds by the Plateau State Government
– Demonstrate the judicial allocation/utilisation of Local Government Funds
– And to correct the deliberate misinformation and distortion of facts that PPF and its allies have sought to do
When pressed about the full details of the petition and what other areas it covers, the group rep said, it is not their intention to pre-empt or scuttle the legislative process by speaking to the press about a matter which was under the consideration of the Honourable. He said, their intention was simply to allow the petition to be read on the floor of the house and debated extensively before it becomes a matter of full public consideration.
He therefore concluded by saying people should simple await further details, as these shall be disseminated shortly.
