Strong indications emerged that the incumbent President of the National Association of Plateau state Students (NAPSS) comrade Hoomsuk Dabup Baba is surreptitiously oiling his campaign machinery and consulting stakeholders to vie for the House of Assembly seat under one of the slots of the Southern zone. This development was reliably disclosed to ViewPointNigeria’s correspondent on phone by a close ally of the president.

If true, this would be quite a remarkable political leap for the young man, given that his only political experience is his current postion as NAPSS president and that there are other less high profile positions by which he can aspire to and cut his teeth to learn the political game instead of jumping into the high profile contest for the House of Assembly position. This development certainly suggests that his political judgement is either great or grossly questionable, because political analysts would argue that the true test of judgement is being able to assess what, where and when to aspire for a political position.

This development certainly suggests that his political judgement is either great or grossly questionable, because political analysts would argue that the true test of judgement is being able to assess what, where and when to aspire for a political position. That said, this would be a phenomenal feat for the youngman and represents a massive change in Plateau politics, where the political scene, which was previously dominated by old men is gradually being replaced by promising young and abled men.

The source who confirmed the story, also suggested that Hoomsuk is currently enjoying the political backing of the commissioner of Local Government and chieftancy affairs Dr. Paul Wai, who is also said to be one of the hopefuls who is hoping that he would be anointed by the incumbent in 2015. When sought to ascertain the veracity of the news, Hoomsuk told ViewpointNigeria correspondent that ‘yes, it is true that by God’s grace, I’m considering putting up a contest for the position. We are already strategising and making plans on how to kick start our political programmes. Speaking further, he said “My boss Dr. Paul Wai deserves the support of Plateau people for the governorship seat. Let’s get this done and ensure continuity of the redemption programs and development plans.’

Hoomsuk Baba hails from Mikang Local government and is currently a law student in the University of Jos. He contested for NAPSS presidential seat but lost to Raymond Tadok last year. The mandate was later returned to him after NAPSS stakeholders found Raymond Tadok unqualified. Given his position as president of several hundreds of thousands of Plateau students at home and in the diaspora, he recently organized a birthday program in honour of Gov. Jang who clocked 70years and was well attended by students and government officials. If his dream of becoming a lawmaker becomes a reality, he would replace Hon. Dio Lamul who is perceived to be seeking re-election.
