In its efforts to ensure that an amicable resolution is reach between the Management and students of University of Jos, the National leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS has waded into the crisis which led to the closure of the institution since November, 2014.
NANS National President, Tijani Usman and the institution’s Management led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai at the end of a six-hour meeting held at the Senate Chamber of the institution agreed to shift their positions so that academic activities could resume.
Briefing newsmen separately at the end of the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai said academic activities had een scheduled to commence on Monday 23rd February, 2015 but the NANS
intervention was to iron out some grey areas.
“Management had investigated the immediate and remote causes of the protest which led to the closure of the school and have taken measures to avoid a recurrence.
“With the intervention of NANS and other well meaning stakeholders, we have decided to bend over backward which is not a sign of weakness but strength. The students have been forgiven but sanctions must be apportioned.
“Leading protest and destroying public property are offenses and the SUG leadership must face disciplinary committee who will look into the issues and determine the next line of action.”
However, the NANS President, Tijani Usman who lamented the wasted period due to the closure also appealed to the Management to tamper justice with mercy as the students have learnt their lessons from the mistake.
Usman said, “I have made it clear to Nigerian students that I will not tolerate violence so they must be law abiding. The SUG of the University of Jos has realized its mistake and apologized to the Management.
“Their suspension has been lifted and they have been recalled but we still appeal to Management to allow the autonomy of the Union, the financial base of the Union should be given back, their charges should be reduced and students should desist from violent protests.”
Meanwhile, the earlier imposed sanction of N12, 000 to be paid by returning students that cover the cost of damages and other expenses incurred by the University as a result of the demonstration was reduced to N6, 000 and students asked to comply before resumption day.
