MAJE: APC’s BEST BET FOR SPEAKER…- Rt Hon. Gagdi (Babayo)

MAJE: APC’s BEST BET FOR 9TH HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES SPEAKER. By Rt Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi (Babayo)

Since the news broke out that Honourable Idris Ahmed Maje is offering to serve as the speaker of the House of Representatives in the 9th National Assembly, I am emboldened by the glowing tributes that permeate the cyberspace in solidarity with this lofty move, irrespective of political party or religious sentiments.

The re-election of Hon Maje to the 9th National Assembly as the member representing Wase Federal Constituency for a record fourth time has served to guarantee that there will be a continuation of quality representation and the making of good laws for Nigeria.

Recent pointers to the fact that the honourable member from Wase Federal Constituency is by God’s grace going to be the choice of members elect as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives, should free and fair contest is allow or the seat be zoned to the North-Central, has been received with thunderous applause.

This is because the quality of the law maker matches the high expectation of a legislative head that would compliment the efforts of the executive arm in moving Nigeria to the next level.

The APC as a party must put certain things into consideration in deciding who becomes the next speaker to avoid a repeat of what happened in the outgoing dispensation, which saw the executive and the legislature at daggers drawn and deprived the nation of the needed cooperation between the two arms of government for development to thrive.

The first is that the party cannot afford to have a speaker whose loyalty to the party is either in doubt or is dependent only on political exigencies. Since elected to the House of Representatives in 2007 under Action Congress, Maje has maintained steadfastness, and was never found to have changed his political platform at any time until the party merged to form APC.

He has contributed in building the party in the North Central part of Nigeria and is sure to guard the party’s interest jealously rather than somebody with little knowledge of how the party came to be. More so, the party should not allow a person whose loyalty is to an Individual be the speaker.

Maje does not does not belong to the category of politicians whose apron strings are attached to some godfathers who may want to dictate how things are run from outside.

One major factor that is working for Maje is that the North Central Zone is yet to produce a speaker or Deputy Speaker since the advent of democracy in Nigeria, particularly our current return to democracy in 1999.

Of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, only the North-Central zone has been shortchanged in the top three positions in the House of Representatives, with all the other five zones producing either the Speaker, Deputy Speaker or the Majority Leader at one point or the other.

Maje has been tested with leadership positions in the past and has shown that he is accountable and astute administrator who brings to bear the quality of his intellect in any organisation he is heading.

The Honourable Member had served as the Executive Secretary of the Plateau Muslims Pilgrims Welfare Board before he was prevailed upon by his people to represent them at the green chamber of the National Assembly in 2007.

In my personal encounter with this stone cold gentleman, the few times I saw his fury was on occasions where injustice was meted on individuals because of their low social standing. Maje is an egalitarian of no mean credentials who is dogged in fighting for the rights of the downtrodden.

Little wonder, Maje is most liked by the commoners than his fellow elites. He a founding member of ACN, and it was in demonstration of the faith his people had in him that he was elected on the platform of a party that was barely known in Plateau State at that time to defeat a PDP candidate that was grounded politically and gunning for a third term.

There is nothing that I will say or write about this refined gentleman that has not been written or said about him before, but I still feel duty bound to add my voice to this clarion call, not minding how monotonous it may sound.

While voice of reasoning prevails on the national leadership of our party to zone the position of speaker of the House of Representatives of the 9th National Assembly to the North-Central zone, we shall continue to rally support for the candidature of Ahmed Idris Maje for the top job. Not as a child of circumstances, but as the best bet for the job whose credentials are glowingly competent to sustain him there.

What is just, must be fair!
