The Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, has alerted residents of the state of potent plans by certain nefarious groups to disrupt the Christmas celebrations in Jos by launching attacks during the festive period. Jang spoke in his capacity as the Chief Security officer of the state. He said that security reports available to him indicated that there were plans to unleash mayhem on people in the state during the forthcoming 2013 Christmas celebrations.

The governor made the disclosure at the 2013 harvest and thanksgiving service of the COCIN Headquarters Church, Jos, on Sunday. He said, “the intelligence gathering exercise in the state has suggested that the state may be attacked during the Christmas celebrations,”. However given the sensitive nature of the information and the fact that security agencies are still working behind the scenes to avert the mayhem, he did not provide further information about the identity of the attackers.

He called on residents of the state, irrespective of religion, societal and economic status, to protect the peace in the state. stressing that security of lives and property should not be left in the hands of security operatives alone, but should be the responsibility of all. He said “people must watch out for strange faces and report them to security agents,”.

He therefore urged the church to pray for the state, so that the evil plans may be thwarted. “We should all pray that God continues to expose those that have risen against us as a state.”  He called on the people of the state to be watchful at all times as the enemies of the state would stop at nothing to pull down the foundation of peace that has been laid.

In closing, Jang used the occasion to dispel rumours that he has anointed someone to succeed him when his tenure ends in 2015, saying that such rumours were baseless and without veracity.
