Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau state has called on the members of the National Assembly to put a hold on constitutional amendment pending the outcome of the national conference being planned by the present administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Jang spoke during a valedictory session held in honour of retiring chief judge of Plateau, Justice Lazarus Dakyen. He said that the National Assembly will be fully empowered to amend the constitution that will be generally accepted by the people only when the people air their views during the conference.
The Governor said “Why is the National Assembly not in favour of a referendum to make the constitution truly the property of Nigerians and not the product of a military gazette which it is? I personally support President Jonathan’s dialogue, but would wish that there be no-go-areas and that the outcome should be subjected to a referendum by the citizens of Nigeria. I call on the National Assembly to suspend further efforts at amending the constitution and await the outcome of the national dialogue.”
Jang also called for the correction of imbalances in the current federalism being practiced in the country which he said was distorted. The Governor swore in Justice Pius Damulak as the acting Chief Judge of the state and called on him not to disappoint the people who are looking up to him as the head of the third arm of Government. He also payed glowing tribute to Dakyen for serving the state meritoriously.
