Media reports reaching us indicates that the Plateau state Governor, Da. Jonah Jang may have waded into the current impasse between the President and the CBN Governor Mal. Lamido Sanusi. Speaking on Sunday, the the Governor criticised the CBN Governor over his face-off with the president.

In his capacity as the factional leader of the Nigerian Governor’s Forum (NGF), Jang urged Sanusi to be cautious in his utterances as he (Sanusi) was not bigger than Nigeria. In a statement released in Abuja, by the NGF media office and signed by Kassim Yakubu, Da. Jonah Jang said as an appointee of the president, if there was any lack of trust between him and the President, the honourable thing for him to do was to quit so that the president could appoint someone he would be comfortable to work with, rather than having to contend or square-off with someone who occupies an appointive office.

He said “If the relationship between the CBN governor and President Jonathan has become frosty, it is only logical that the president becomes uncomfortable knowing how sensitive the CBN is to his transformation agenda. Moreover, we elected the president to run the country and so we cannot be held hostage by an appointee of government if it is true that Mr. President has asked for the resignation of the CBN governor,” he added.

He went further to day that since Nigerians put their trust in Jonathan to pilot the affairs of the nation when they voted him in as president, he should be allowed to run his government without unnecessary distractions, especially from appointees who serve at the pleasure of the president.

It will be recalled that President Jonathan told Sanusi to resign his position as CBN Governor following the letter he purportedly leaked to the press indicating that NNPC did not remit $49.8 billion to the CBN. The Minister of Finance, Dr Okonjo-Iweala while reacting, disagreed with Sanusi and stated that it was $10.8 billion that was yet to be reconciled between the CBN and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
