The Plateau State Government has asked its accountants, budget officers, and auditors who are not computer literate to become so within in three months or be shown the way out. Governor Jonah Jang stated this on Wednesday in Jos at a sensitization workshop on International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) for top policy makers of Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the State.

The governor explained that “a threat to this new accounting system which I find disturbing is that most of our technical staff; accountants, budget officers and auditors are not computer literate. “Since we are determined to succeed, I hereby direct that all these technical persons be given at least three months to be computer literate, failing which appropriate actions will be taken against them.”

On his part, in an opening remark, the Commissioner of Finance, Davou Mang, urged accounting officers to be prudent in their public dealings. “As policy makers, we are accountable to the public,” the commissioner said. “As policy makers, you are monitors and supervisors of your subordinates.” “If you do not know the reporting formats or systems in use, how then can you supervise your subordinates effectively?”
