The Centre for the Advocacy of Justice and Rights (CAJR), has organised a symposium to sensitise Plateau women on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), peace building, inequality, non inclusion, among others issues affecting them.

Speaking at the event in Jos, the Executive Director of CAJR Miss Etty Peter said the event was organised to mark the 2021 International Women’s Day.

She explained that the symposium was also organised in collaboration with the Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, with support from Nigeria Early Recovery Initiative (NERI) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Peter explained that the event aimed at sensitising Plateau women on issues that affects them directly, with a view of finding solutions to those problems.

“We organised this symposium to educate the women on gender-based violence, inequality, non-inclusion in decision making and other cultural and political issues that affects women in the society.

“We have brought in experts to speak to these women on ways they can seek justice and fight for their rights.

“Through this, the women will understand the roles they can play to be included in decision making and ensure a more equal society,”she said.

Peter said the symposium would also serve as an avenue for the women to share their experience, so as to serve as a lesson to others.

She explained that participants were drawn from Mangu, Riyom, Barkin Ladi, Bassa, and Bokkos local government areas of the state, government agencies and other organisations.

The Plateau Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development Hon. Mrs Rebecca Sambo said the event was timely.

Sambo assured that the government was committed to protect and defend the rights of women in the state, adding that Gov. Simon Lalong is passionate in ensuring women get their pride of place in the society.

She further promised that the state government would continue to partner with groups and individuals to create awareness on the rights of women in the society.
