Huawei in collaboration with Windows has unveiled a modified smartphone run by windows completely for Africa. The device was launched in partnership with Microsoft in its 4Afrika Initiative. Mr Gustavo Fuchs who is the director of Windows Phone division in Africa and the Middle East said the main purpose of the scheme was to have affordable windows phone in Africa.
Seven African countries that will benefit from the initial roll out are Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Angola, Ivory Coast, Kenya and South Africa. The South African market will be operator-led marketed; Ivory Coast sold at retail while Nigeria and Angola will have a mixed business environment. The customised app store will be designed and built by Africans. Fuchs said that the main objective of the launch was to have an increase penetration of smartphone across the continent. Africa has an average of 10% smartphone penetration while USA and Europe have about 50%.

The phone which is a customised version of Huawei Ascend W1 has a 4in touch screen and has a 5 megapixel camera. Fuchs said that the phone has got a 420 hour standby between charges and aims to make millions of the smart phone accessible across the continent in few years’ time.
