A civil society group, Civil Society Network Against Corruption, CSNAC, on Tuesday asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to investigate the Plateau State Government, over a N20 billion corruption allegation.
CSNAC is a coalition of some civic groups in Nigeria chaired by Olanrewaju Suraju.
On June 5, PREMIUM TIMES reported that a group, Plateau Patriotic Front, petitioned the Plateau State House of Assembly, alleging gross financial misconduct of over N20 billion against Mr. Jang.
The allegations included extra budgetary spending, misappropriation, inflated contract sum, unauthorized bank loans, as well as involvement of the governor’s family in financial management of the state, among others.
The group claimed it sent copies of the petition to all the lawmakers which subsequently made the petition the number one item on the order paper of the House’s sitting.
The lawmakers, however, failed to discuss the petition as there was pandemonium when it was to be debated. The House was subsequently adjourned. When the lawmakers resumed the next day, the petition was not talked about.
Mr. Suraju called on EFCC to commence an urgent investigation on the allegations as he said he believed the petition might never be revisited on the floor of the Plateau State House of Assembly.
“By the powers vested on the Commission under the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act 2004, CSNAC hereby call on you to commence urgent investigate into the allegations these allegations for the purpose of accountability and public awareness,” Mr. Suraju said.
He also said that tolerating such will only abet corruption in the state, which has been experiencing conflict, and in Nigeria as a whole.
