Gbong Gwom Jos resolves title dispute relating to Igbo chieftancy in Jos

The Igbo community leaders in Jos, the Plateau state capital, have mended fence with the traditional ruler of the municipality, the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, over the controversial title of Eze Igbo.

Recall that the monarch had announced the abolition of Eze Igbo title in Jos, warning that people should stop parading themselves with that title, since it is not proper to have two kings in the same domain and as such, he cannot accord recognition of Eze Igbo title on anybody.

Buba said he prefers Onye Ndu Ndigbo or Igbo representative in his council or by whatever name that would not clash with another with his kingdom’s status.

However, at the weekend, the Igbo leadership met the Gbong Gwom, assuring him that the matter has been put to rest as the Igwe who is the leader of the Ndigbo in Plateau state will now go by the title ‘Onye Ndu Ndigbo’, as against Eze Igbo.

Speaking on behalf of Ndigbo, the President General, Igbo Community Association (ICA), in the state, Bar. Innocent Asogwa, informed the Jos monarch, that the association’s constitution has been amended for Eze Igbo Jos to read Onye Ndu’ Ndigbo (Igbo Leader in Jos).

Responding, the Jos paramount ruler said he is not out to witch hunt any community in Jos, saying that the decision for titles to be properly addressed is for the collective good of all.

Earlier, the royal father had frown at the divisions and acrimony Ndigbo expose themselves just to elect or appoint a leader to oversee their affairs and represent their interest in Jos and his palace.

He had earlier suspended all dealings with Ndigbo in his palace until the final resolution of their crisis, decrying the acrimonious division and lack of unity amongst them. He stressed that no meaningful progress can be achieved without unity which promotes peaceful coexistence on the Plateau.

He informed them that the seat for Ndigbo in his palace is reserved for Igbo and will remain vacant until the peaceful resolution of the crisis amongst them and the subsequent presentation of a single representative to him by the Igbo in Jos.

However, the ICA was happy to inform him that the rift between Prof. Jerome C. Obilom who is the Igwe (Igbo leader in Jos) and Samuel Achi, has been resolved.

Our correspondent reports that the Igwe, Prof. Obilom, who is the authentic Igbo leader in Plateau and Achi were seen embracing each other after the meeting with the Jos monarch.
