Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Buba has chided the youth in Jos South LGA for indulging in severe drunkenness. He made the remarks while on a “Peace advocacy tour” in conjunction men of the Special Task Force to Kuru village in Jos South. The objective of the “Peace advocacy tour” was to make a truce between men of the Special Task Force (STF) who have several times, been accused of complicity in clandestine attacks on Berom villages and their host communities.

In his address, he stated that the drunken behaviour of the youth could be attibuted to the insecurity being encountered, explaining that a drunk person would not be aware of security risks or happenings in his immediate environment. He went on to scold parents for not inculcating the right values in the youth in their formative years. He said “Parents, especially mothers have failed in their responsibilities of child upbringing, and that is why the issue of drunkenness keeps rising in Plateau state. The Bible tells us to bring up children in the proper way”. Following this remark by the Gbong Gwom, It was gathered that women who did not agree with his assertions were heard to make disgruntled and disapproving remarks.

Speaking on behalf of the youth, the Kuru youth leader, Mr. Daniel Pwajok conceded that some youth in his domain indulged in drunkenness and apologized unreservedly to the audience on their behalf. He went on to say that he will endeavour to sensitise them about the perils of habitual drinking. He however averred that whilst drunkenness could be a problem in the community, their villages were continually being attacked by men of the Special Task Force who should be protecting them. He cited the example of an event that happened in Vom last year, when military men shot and killed a youth amongst several others who were protesting. He therefore concluded his address by calling for the removal of the STF from Jos, stating that they had out-stayed their welcome.
