A family of nine was on Sunday night attacked with seven members, including a husband and wife, killed by gunmen in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau state.

The Council Chairman, Barkin Ladi, Emmanuel Lomang, who on Monday said he visited the scene of the incident, confirmed the deaths via a telephone interview with Journalist in Jos.

A spokesperson for the Police in the state, Abuh Emmanuel, also confirmed the incident, but declined comment on the casualty figure.
“Yes, a family of nine were attacked and killed in their residence by gunmen,” Mr. Lomang said. “The man and his wife with five others were killed. Three of his children were also killed, while two were relations. However, two survived. The survivors are being treated at the Barkinladi General Hospital, but they are badly injured.

“I have visited the house this (Monday) morning with security operatives. They assured me that they would investigate the act. It is unfortunate that the act of assassination of innocent citizens in Barkinladi is becoming too many. Security agents have to wake up to their responsibilities of protecting lives and property.”

According to witnesses, the bodies of most of the seven victims killed were bullet ridden. Witnesses identified the head of the family as Jacob Wangte (62), a retired police officer.

The other victims were his wife, Ruth Jacob (50), Katok Jacob (27), Rachael (21), Longhong (18), Nandelmon (15), and Shalom whose age was not disclosed at press time.

The incident led to a protest within the council headquarters, Barkinladi. The protesters barricaded most of the town’s exit, hindering passers-by through the council to the Central and Southern part of Plateau state.

It took the intervention of security operatives to control the protesters. It would be recalled that the Sunday incident in Barkindi town is the second within a month.

A ward chairman of the All Progressive Congress was shot dead by gunmen recently. No suspect has been apprehended in connection with the killing.

Similarly, a deputy chairman of the People’s Democratic Party in Riyom Local Government was attacked and killed in his home. The assassins injured his ten years old daughter.
