The Commissioner of Police in Plateau, Mr Chris Olakpe, on Tuesday honoured a Fulani leader, Alhaji Bello Lamido, for saving the life of a Berom man. Presenting the award in Jos, Olakpe said Lamido had protected the Berom man from attack by angry Fulani youths, when the man strayed into Ropp village of Barkin Ladi Local government last year at the height of the Plateau crisis. He commended the Fulani leader for his display of patriotism, saying his action is worthy of emulation by all warring factions in the state. “The Berom man who was completely drunk strayed into the Fulani enclave at the time they were clashing with each other over land matters. “When Lamido saw the drunken man in his area, he prevented the youths from attacking or killing him. “Lamido picked the drunken person on his motorcycle and returned him to members of his family who had already started crying that he had been killed,” he said.

The commissioner said that the community, in appreciation, reported the gesture to the police. Olakpe called on other traditional rulers in the state to emulate “the good conduct of the Fulani leader” and always guide their youth against taking laws into their hands. He used the occasion to warn them against cattle rustling and unnecessary killing of innocent persons in the state, adding that henceforth the command would prosecute cattle rustlers as armed robbers.
Olakpe later presented a medal and 10-yards of Guinea Brocade to Lamido in appreciation of his efforts at promoting peace and mutual understanding among communities in Plateau.
