President Goodluck Jonathan has re-echoed the determination of his Government to phase out old coaches and give Nigerians a modern train service as obtainable in developed countries. The president represented by his Vice, Alhaji Nnamadi Sambo was speaking at the commissioning of the first set of modern coaches and diesel multiple units in Lagos.

They include six boarding coaches for long distance and six air-conditioned diesel multiple unit’s mass transit train for short distance. Sambo noted that development is an answer to the mass transit needs of Nigerians in line with the transformation agenda of the present administration.

He said “It gives me great pleasure to be here today to formally perform the commissioning of two number air-conditioned diesel multiple units and six 68-passenger couches which are part of the concerted efforts of our administration to steadily improve the inventory of railway road stock.”

Alhaji Bamanga Tukur who is the Chairman of Nigeria Railway Corporation said that government will continue to support the sector and provide affordable, safe and value added rail transport service. Tukur added that with the new trains, Nigeria has marked another milestone in its efforts to standardise the sector.

The Managing Director (MD) of Nigerian Railway Corporation, Engr. Adeseyi Sijuwade said, “In fulfillment of the federal government’s transportation agenda for the railway sector. We took delivery of the two sets of diesel multiple units and six, 68 sitter air-conditioned passenger coaches.”
