Women from Bokkos local government of Plateau State who were displaced during the recent attacks on several communities of the council area, stormed the Plateau State House of Assembly appealing for proper compensation and rebuilding of their damaged communities destroyed by the unknown gunmen.
The displaced women, in their hundreds, wore black dresses and arrived the State House Assembly as early as 8.30am, holding placards with inscriptions such as, “Prevailing humanitarian situation in Daffo following recent attacks by Fulani herdsmen”.
Leader of the Women, Mrs Comfort Malan, while presenting their petition to the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon Peter Azi and other members, said over 7,000 persons have been displaced from nine villages of Daffo District of Bokkos LGC of Plateau State.
“Urgent call to action on the prevailing humanitarian situation in Daffo following recent attacks by Fulani herdsmen, our cries with regards to the devastating carnage that occurred on January 24, 2018 at Farundong-Hai and March 8, 2018, which started from Nghakudung and spread to seven other villages leading to 32 deaths, 10 severe injuries, displacement of over 7,000 from nine villages and the missing of 10 others”.
The women described as unfortunate and condemnable, a situation where thousands of school children are out of school, losing study time and facing threats of being dragged into various social vices due to restiveness and illiteracy.
Top among the women group’s concerns are the lack of government attention and intervention with regards to their plights, after the herdsmen attacks at Daffo where several lives were lost, properties destroyed and many families displaced.
The women also disclosed that 1,017 Houses were razed down during the attacks, assorted foodstuff, large sums of money, furniture and other valuables worth millions of naira.
“Adequate security should be supplied to the affected communities and the same strategy employed to guard farmers considering that the 2018 rainy season has commenced, any further delay in ensuring that these villagers return to their ancestral homes and farmlands would create severe food shortages and debilitating poverty”.
Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Peter Azi, while responding on behalf of the lawmakers after receiving the petition of the women and also a letter from middle Belt Youth Arise Group, said the State Assembly is in total support of the petition.
Azi, however, assured them of prompt response to the security challenges in the state, saying the petition will be handed over to the governor for onward delivery to the Presidency.
