The Plateau House of Assembly Committee on Works and Transport has urged the state government to take urgent measures to complete the ongoing road projects in the state.

The committee Chairman, Istifanus Mwansat, gave the charge when members of the committee visited the state Ministry of Works in Jos on Thursday.

Mwansat, the member representing Pankshin South, said the road completion had become “very urgent”, because such roads had become dangerous to road users.

He said that the contractors who dug up the roads had since left the sites.

Mwansat said, “Most of the uncompleted roads have remained a torn in the flesh of most motorists; they lead to several accidents and damage cars on daily basis.

“We acknowledge the fact that most of these road projects started under the previous administration, but we think that for the good and benefit of the people, the projects should be completed immediately.

“Since this government says it is on a rescue mission, there is the need for such rescue mission to be done in time so as to save our people from the hardship they are facing on the death traps called roads.

“Commuters are suffering, motorists visit mechanic workshops on daily basis because of the bad nature of some of the roads, especially the express leading into the main town.”

Contributing, Amos Kumtul, a member of the committee, appealed to the ministry to include the construction of roads at the local communities in its budget proposal.

According to him, what a local man needs is not the world class road constructed for the urban dwellers; he just wants an access road that trucks can move through and convey his farm produce to the market.

Kumtul also advised the ministry to ensure that the roads being constructed were up to standard, stressing that low quality roads would not be accepted.

Responding, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr Sunday Hyat, attributed the delay in the completion of some of the road projects to paucity of funds.

Hyat listed other reasons to include the change in government as the new administration usually require some time to study the details of every ongoing job.

He, however, assured that work would soon resume at the project sites, and expressed government’s deep commitment to complete every project.

He told the committee that some of the contractors had returned to site, and promised that the roads would be motorable in no distant time.
