ViewPointNigeria’s citizen reporters at the University of Jos report of violent protests at the university this morning –as students took to the streets protesting a rumoured hike in school fees by the University authorities.

Students were said to have turned out in large numbers to protest what was perceived as the University’s strategy to increase students yearly fees. During the protest, which was largely as the University main campus on Bauchi Road, the major road was blocked off, leading to severe traffic chaos, backing up all the way to the top of the Zaria road by-pass.

The students chanted Aluta/Unionist songs, saying they resisted any fee hikes and calling for the immediate resignation of the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai.

At the time of filing in this report, soldiers had been deployed to restore normalcy on the campus, but the students boldly resisted any affront by the soldiers, taunting them to go to Sambisa forest and stop harassing civilians.

ViewPointNigeria is still trying to get through to the University authorities for comments about this matter and shall bring an update much later.
