ASUU Unijos built and donates one thousand lecture   theatre

Students and staff of the University of Jos alongside National executives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) today witnessed history as the union built and handover a one- thousand seater capacity lecture theatre to the management of the University of Jos-Nigeria

The edifice was name after a late national legal adviser of the union, Late Dr.David Jangkam Lecture Theatre, speaking on this special occasion, the president of ASUU Comrade President, Biodun Ogunyemi says : “it is a great privilege for the National Leadership of our great union- The Academic Staff Union of Universities project (ASUU)- to be part of this landmark event holding here at the university of Jos (UNIJOS). Today’s commissioning of the 1000-seater capacity Lecture theatre of ASUU_UNIJOS is a histotic event which significance must not be lost on us for three reasons.

The comrade president, says that first, ” this is the first time in the history of university education since 1948 that a campus- based union would conceive, implement and deliver a project of this magnitude for the use of staff and students of a university in Nigeria.

Secondly, the comrade president emphasizes that the project “has practically demonstrated to the “doubting Thomases” that ASUU does not ravel in wishful thinking. the president declares that ASUU ” we walk our talk

Thirdly, the ASUU president says that the occasion proves that ASUU is vindicated from the unfounded accusation which tagged ASUU as Making “Selfish demands” from government. the president reiterates that ” our union’s collective bargaining agreements and sundry memorandum over funding, conditions of service, academic freedom and university autonomy, and others matters bordering effective performance of the Nigerian University system have given Nigerian public university system in a marginal existence and the promises of a lifeline.

while congratulating the congress at the University of Jos, despite the stagnated salary for over 11 years, the president, lament the forceful migration into the discredited Integrated payroll and personnel information system (IPPIS) which he describe as further “distorted and devalued the take-home pay of our members.”

in the same vain, the Branch chairperson, Comrade Maigoro Lazarus lambasted and berates the Minister of Labour, Dr, Chris N. for describing academic staff as “Lodo” players instead of research. The ASUU chairperson describe this initiative as one in many as the union pays school charges to indigent students as part of its community service.

The climax of the occasion is the launching of the lecture theatre and handing over of the keys to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof S.S Maimako. represented by Prof. Tanko Ishaya DVC academics

The Vice-Chancellor appreciated ASUU in the University of Jos for a cordial working relationship and also for contributing to the infrastructure in the University. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor announced that for about five months now his salary had not been paid due to the IPPIS enrollment by the FGN,

The president of ASUU announced that soon the union will begin a test run of the alternative to IPPIS as built by university scholars in Nigeria.
