The Leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone A has faulted the Federal Government over the lingered industrial dispute with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which climaxed with a Nationwide strike by the Union.
NANS regrets that Nigeria despite its ranking in Africa has been unable to meet up with the UNESCO demand of 26% annual budgetary allocation to be spent on Education.
NANS gave the FG six (6) days to intervene or face mass protest by Nigerian Students. The Statement which was signed by the NANS Zone A Coordinator, Comrade Umar Farouk Lawal, referred to the FG’s attitude towards the funding of the country’s education sector as dubious. It is presented as received.
“6 November 2018
PRESS RELEASE
POSITION OF NANS ZONE A ON ASUU/COEASU STRIKE AND THE WAY FORWARD.
Yesterday, the leadership of NANS zone A made a press release on ASUU and COEASU strike, this is not enough as it will be hypocritical on our side if we refuse to call spade a spade.
The approach of top Government officials and those in corridor of power on adequate funding of education in Nigeria is not only dubious but incriminating, because these same set of people are the major promoters and patronisers of education tourism.
Our laboratories equipments are moribund,while we have shortage of lecture theatres and halls, little or no internet network to access E-books or E-facilities.
It is a shame on a country that tag itself as ‘Giant of Africa’ for not meeting up with UNESCO prescription on education funding, Nigeria Government either present or past, has gave education the lowest percentage in its annual budget, how do you expect to curb societal menaces that are bedevilling our dear country without proper funding of education.
Way forward;
We give the Federal Government an ultimatum of 6 days, as we urge Nigeria Students to prepare for the brainstorming exercise, where we shall shutdown FCT and some major roads in the country if ASUU and COEASU demands are not address within the time frame of our ultimatum.
Untill man dies, struggle continue.
Umar Faruk Lawal
Coordinator NANS Zone A”
