Data from the Plateau State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, made available to ViewPointNigeria, indicates that no fewer than 157 people have died in road accidents in the three months period starting from July to September 2013 in the state. This figure is a significant increase over the same period in 2012, during which less than 100 died from road accidents. 

Confirming this incident, the Commander of FRSC Zone 4, Mr. Yakubu Attah, provided the figures on Thursday at the community health campaign in Jos. He described the happenings as truly unfortunate and stated that his organisation are continuing to sensitise the public about vehicular safety. Further speaking, he said in addition to the 157 people who died, an additional 1,191 persons also sustained various injuries in the same period.

He identified two major reasons for the escalation of road accidents (1) failure of drivers and road users to properly observe rules on highways and (2) the increased of high blood pressure among road users.

In explaining the second point about how high blood pressure can result to accidents, he said “A road user who has high blood pressure, would typically lack visual acuity and that can pose a significant risk to other road users. He therefore encouraged drivers to be more perceptive and aware of hazards and to also undergo frequent medical checks as a means of curtailing dangerous occurences.
