In furtherance of its human capital development drive and commitment to social responsibility, the Plateau State Branch of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has paid the Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE) registration fees for 35 inmates at the Jos Custodial Centre of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
The intervention formed part of activities marking the Association’s 2026 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Day, themed “Shaping Lasting Impact through Accountable Leadership.”
The delegation, led by the Branch Chairman, Dr. Anthony Musa Garba, comprised members of the Branch Executive, the Welfare Committee and other members of the Association.
Presenting the funds to facilitate the examination registration, Dr. Garba said the gesture aligned with ANAN’s commitment to capacity building and the promotion of education as a vital instrument for personal transformation and societal development.
He described the theme of the 2026 CSR Day as apt and timely, stressing that accountable leadership must translate into meaningful interventions that improve lives, particularly among vulnerable and underserved members of society.
According to him, the decision to support the inmates was informed by the need to extend educational opportunities to individuals who might otherwise lack the resources and support required to complete their secondary education.
He noted that the intervention would not only provide the beneficiaries with an opportunity to pursue their academic aspirations but also give them a sense of belonging, love and acceptance as they undergo reformation and rehabilitation within the custodial facility.
Dr. Garba encouraged the inmates to remain hopeful, embrace positive behavioural change and learn from their experiences, urging them to desist from the habits and conduct that led to their incarceration.
He expressed optimism that, upon regaining their freedom, the beneficiaries would apply the lessons learnt during their time in custody to become responsible citizens and productive members of society.
The ANAN Plateau Chairman further reiterated the commitment of the current Branch Executive to sustained capacity building through professional training and other initiatives aimed at enhancing members’ professional competence, development and overall well-being.
The delegation was received by the State Controller of Corrections, J. N. Fadul, alongside other management staff of the Jos Custodial Centre, who witnessed the presentation.
In his response, the Controller commended ANAN Plateau for the educational support, describing it as a laudable intervention with the potential to equip the inmates with the knowledge and qualifications needed to pursue better opportunities after regaining their freedom.
He acknowledged the importance of educational initiatives in supporting the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates, noting that access to education could improve their prospects of successful reintegration into society.
The visit also featured the donation of sanitary pads to female inmates by the Plateau Chapter of the Professional Women Accountants in Nigeria (PROWAN).
Presenting the items, the PROWAN Plateau Chairperson, Mrs. Pauline George Davison, FCNA, explained that the donation was intended to promote personal hygiene and support the health and dignity of female inmates, particularly those who may have limited access to essential sanitary products.
The two interventions underscored the accounting professionals’ commitment to extending the benefits of professional leadership beyond the workplace by investing in education, promoting human dignity and supporting vulnerable members of society.
Through the initiative, ANAN Plateau and PROWAN Plateau reaffirmed the importance of accountable leadership, compassion and inclusive development in building a society where every individual has an opportunity to improve their circumstances and contribute meaningfully to society.
