The killing spree across Middle belt states has escalated another notch, with another gruesome attack in Benue and Nasarawa states.

In Benue, gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, yesterday invaded Agena in Gwer Local Government Area of the state, killing about 20 persons.
This attack is happening approx. 3 days after another bloody attack by Fulani Marauders on Gbajimba, Guma Local Government Area, where over 50 lives on both sides were lost.

Reports reaching us indicates that the suspected marauders besieged the village at about 6 am. on Tuesday when the villagers were just getting out of bed. A resident who spoke to journalists said “when we woke up at about 6 a.m., we observed that the entire village had been surrounded by armed herdsmen. They started shooting at us as we scampered for safety.
Confirming the attack, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), said so far, seven corpses had been recovered and deposited at a mortuary. He added that police officers had been drafted to the area to restore peace and order while investigation into the incident had commenced.

In a separate development, no fewer than 15 persons were on Tuesday morning killed (with 6 others sustaining various degrees of injury) in a fresh attack by gunmen on Giza village, Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. Preliminary investigations revealed that the gunmen, who were armed with sophisticated weapons, invaded the community around 6:00am in the morning and started shooting sporadically. The gunmen also destroyed property worth millions of naira, including the palace of the paramount ruler of Giza Chiefdom Elegu Abu ll.
One of the survivors confirmed that “the gunmen invaded the community in the early hours of Tuesday shooting sporadically and chanting incantations. “They came and killed several people. As I speak with you, we have been able to recover nine corpses from a nearby bush, apart from the corpses we saw in the community.

Confirming the attack to journalists on phone in Lafia, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Numan Umaru Ismaila, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) said only five people were killed during the attack. Again this is disparate to the number reported by victims and eye-witnesses who have quoted higher figures.

According to him, on getting the report, a combined team of mobile policemen led by Divisional Police Officer (DPO), DSP Ikojo Sunday, mobilised to the scene and repelled the attack, adding that the information available to the police indicates that three inhabitants and two attackers were killed during the attack.

He noted that the command had deployed adequate personnel to the trouble area to restore normalcy, while investigation was ongoing.
