The residents of several areas within the heart of Jos township, including the old and new campuses of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Murtala Mohammed Way, Rikkos, Gangere, Millionaire Quarters, Jos University Staff Quarters and Bauchi Road by-pass have cried out for help over the lack of pipe borne water in the area.
According to residents, the water scarcity which began approximately 4 months ago is now taking its toll on the populace, as alternative sources of water such as rainfall and well water are no longer redemptive with the passing rainy season.
The residents said they are gradually being pushed to source water from nearby streams and they are worried that this may soon lead to an outbreak of waterborne diseases.
Public Relations Manager of the Plateau State Water Board, Mr. Nangor Ndam blamed his organisation’s inability to supply potable water to the affected parts of the city on a pipe burst from the Lamingo Water Plant. However, when contacted for clarification, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Mallam Idi Waziri said the problem was due to the theft of cables supplying electricity to the water plant at the Lamingo water works.

For several years, accessibility of potable water has been a source of concern to residents of the state, and the present administration has undertaken several water upgrade projects with the aim of alleviating some of the long suffering of the people. The latest project executed by the State Government in this regard, was the reticulation of all the main water supply pipelines in the state. The reticulation was never undertaken by past administration, since the inception of the Plateau state water board, and therefore the present effort represents a “first” and a huge achievement for the state.
It is of note that the acute water shortage in Jos has prompted a 2012 study by the University of Jos ─ titled “Preliminary Investigation for A Sustainable Water Supply to the University of Jos, Nigeria” — which recommended the construction of a dam/water treatment plant and water distribution unit at a cost of about N500m for a long-term/sustainable water Supply for the university.
