Abok Nuhu Ayuba emerges speaker of Plateau State House of Assembly

In a keenly contested speakership race for the 9th Assembly, Hon Abok Nuhu Ayuba has emerged speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly.

Abok, the 33 years old graduate is a first time lawmaker representing Jos East Constituency. He is a graduate of both the University of Jos (Law) and the Plateau State polytechnic (finished in 2007) and is married to Janet N Abok (with two children).

Hon Abok Nuhu Ayuba was returned unopposed as most colleagues rallied around behind him. Hon. Ibrahim Baba Hassan (Babs) his nearest challenger was prior to the vote, said to have tried to garner the support of his fellow colleagues but failed to get the requisite number of endorsements and as such took the high ground by personally nominating Hon Abok for the lofty position. His nomination was seconded by Hon. Esther Dusu, which set precedent for Hon Abok’s return as speaker. Hon Ibrahim Baba Hassan is a 4 time lawmaker representing Jos North North and had put a very strong case for being elected –being one of the longest serving members in the House.

This is a big step forward for the next generation of candidates emerging and taking centre stage in the Plateau political scene.

Ahead of the elections, all eyes were on Governor Simon Lalong to see where he would lean, but the Governor cleverly kept his cards close to his chest to avoid meddling into legislative affairs.

Hon Saleh Shehu Yipmong was re-elected Deputy Speaker of the assembly.
