Plateau state House of Assembly yesterday set up a committee to investigate the financial operations of the 17 Local Government Areas in the state. The move by the lawmakers is coming barely one year after Governor Simon Lalong appointed transition committee members to run the affairs at the third tier of government in the state. Only last month, the State House of Assembly renewed their tenure by two months.
It was the third time the lawmakers extended the tenures of the transition committee members since they were appointed by the Governor in July last year .
However, sources close to the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr Peter Azi informed our correspondent in Jos yesterday that since the transition committee members came into office ,the House had been inundated with series of petitions bordering on financial recklessness, a development which forced the lawmakers to constitute a probe panel on the LGA funds yesterday. A member of the probe panel who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the development to our correspondent.
He said:”As a House committed to accountability and transparency, we need to know how the council areas have been utilizing the funds that accrued to them. We can no longer keep silent over what goes on in the council areas.”
According to him, they had been given two weeks to carry out their assignment and report back to the House.
