News reaching our desk suggests that suspected dissidents have invaded farmlands in Gyel -a suburb of Bukuru and destroyed crops and plants worth millions of Naira. Up to 30 farmlands were said to have been completely destroyed by yet to be identified dissidents.

At the time of filing this report, it was not immediately clear who was responsible for the colossal damage, but residents of Gyel have blamed Fulani herdsmen for the deed, saying evidence of the destruction points to the fact that some grazing may have taken place too. Observation of the damage, showed that a large number of the crops were uprooted from the ground, while a others were cut down from the mid-section -perhaps using some form of cutlass. No evidence of an attempt to steal the farm produce was seen, as all the crops were seen to be intact on the ground, with the exception of some which may have been trampled and consumed by animals. The crops destroyed include maize, sorghum, sugar cane etc.

Speaking on the incident, the Youth leader of Gyel community, Pam Monday accused Fulani herdsmen of carrying out the dastardly act and averred that there appears to be a slight shift in strategy from the marauders because they appear to have widened their attack to now include the destruction of the source of livelihood of farmers.

Mr. Monday said there was a small vigilante group from his community who patrol in the area, but claimed that it would have been a lot more effective if the STF had cooperated with them in that respect. He therefore appealed to the STF to work closely with the community in preventing such occurences.

Confirming the incident, the STF Media Officer, Capt. Salisu Mustapha, said a report on the incident had been filed and that they were doing all they could to track the suspects.
