The Plateau State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Housing is to sanction erring contractors handling road projects in the state.
The Chairman of the committee, Mr Salleh Shehu, made the announcement after inspecting the construction work on the Katako-Jingre road in the Bassa Local Government Area of the state.
Shehu expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work on the 31-kilometre road project. ”It is disappointing that this road project, contracted over three years ago, has not yet been completed.
”Government saw the need to cushion the suffering of the people within this locality because they are mostly farmers. ”But if for such a long period, a contract of 31-kilometer road with just four bridges is taking this long, then I think something is definitely wrong.
“We urge this contractor and all contractors handling road projects in this state to step up or have their contracts terminated,” he said.
Mr Kingsley Nwanicha, the Project Manager of United Radders Nig. Ltd., the contracting firm, attributed the delay on the project to a lack of funds.
Nwanicha said that the company had “three unclear outstanding certificates hanging’’ and that it the matter had truncated the progress of the project.
”Sir, if only one of the three outstanding certificates is cleared, it will go a long way to assist us execute this project without further delay,” he said.
It is reported that members of the committee inspected the project alongside the Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Works and Transport, Mr Sunday Hyat.
