In Jos, a group has announced the resumption of street protests.

D.M Long’gul reports from Jos.

A group called, the Coalition for Jos End Bad Governance has announced the resumption of street protests to address critical issues impacting Nigerian citizens, including hunger, inflation, electricity tariffs, poor leadership, insecurity, and other necessary reforms.

The statement received by VPN News Desk reveals that the halted street protest in Jos, Plateau State, is set to continue following the lifting of the 24-hour curfew. The state government had imposed the curfew due to criminal activities that threatened the state’s peace through looting in the Bauchi Road area.

the insisted that “

We initially held a peaceful protest for four days and suspended it for two days based on intelligence reports indicating attempts by certain individuals to hijack the protest and cause unrest. We commend our security team for their vigilance and the Plateau State government for imposing a 24-hour curfew to maintain peace.”

other details in the statements indicates the following in details as captured:

COMMENDATION AND CONTINUATION:

We commend the governor and security personnel for their swift actions in maintaining order. However, we firmly state that our protest will resume on Wednesday, August 7, 2023, once the curfew is relaxed. Our protest is planned for ten days, and we remain committed to this timeline.

  1. CALL FOR TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY:

We call on the government and security forces to provide a comprehensive briefing to the state on the arrests made, disciplinary measures taken against law offenders, and the identification of their sponsors. Publicly naming these individuals will help the state recognize the enemies of a peaceful Plateau.

  1. RIGHT TO PROTEST:

We have resolved to continue our protest in other Local Government Areas (LGAs) if the government does not relax the curfew. The curfew primarily affected communities in Jos North, not Jos South. Therefore, citizens should be allowed to continue their activities and protest peacefully. If the curfew is not relaxed, then it is a deliberate attempt by the state government to frustrate peaceful protesters demanding an end to bad governance in Nigeria.

  1. HOLDING THE GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABLE:

We hold the Plateau State Government accountable for its actions before, during, and after the protest. The government must be proactive in delivering democracy to its people and should not be sentimental at any point. We also demand the publication of the names of beneficiaries of agricultural interventions and youth empowerment programs and clarification on the Presidential speech which stated that governors have been empowered with more money to deliver governance. The governor’s address this morning failed to address the real concerns of the common man.

RESUMPTION WITH RENEWED DETERMINATION:

We will return to the streets with renewed determination and formidable forces to demand our rights. This movement will not end until we achieve victory. We call on all followers, members, and citizens to be ready to re-engage in peaceful protest.

The Coalition for Jos End Bad Governance is steadfast in its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian citizens. Our demands are clear, and our resolve is unwavering.

We urge the government to heed our calls and take immediate action to address the pressing issues facing the nation.
