Worried by the incessant killings in villages in some local government areas of Plateau North Senatorial zone, traditional rulers in the area have appealed to the Federal Government and other relevant agencies to step up efforts at arresting the trend.
The traditional rulers who spoke at a one-day seminar aimed at encouraging interaction on how to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts expressed regret over high rate of attacks, ambush and killings especially in Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Councils.
The seminar, which took place in Jos and was organized by the Institute of Governance and Social Research, IGSR also provided a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas on the nature and dynamics of conflict in the affected communities.
Addressing the participants, the Institute’s Programme Manager, Mr. Folorunsho Oloruntunde noted that conflicts management was very challenging hence the need for the people to imbibe the culture of forgiveness and peace so that development could take place in the zone.
His words: “Managing conflicts is challenging. If conflicts are not managed properly, the results are predictable as more problems will arise, positions hardened, gaps in communication created, information distorted and crisis emerges.
“Though conflicts are inevitable, there are ways of prevention and this seminar is a follow up to series of early warning fora organized by IGSR in order to sensitize all stakeholders on early detection, reporting conflicts and subsequent responses.”
