An NGO, Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria (CCFN) has organised a conference to sensitise Plateau women on ways to prevent ethno-religious conflicts in the communities.

The conference was tagged “Preventing Ethno-Religious Conflict in a Pluralistic Society”.

Speaking at the event on Monday in Jos, Miss Abigail Magaji, the Field Officer of the organisation in Plateau, said the exercise was aimed at promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence among the people.

According to her, the sensitisation is part of its “Zaman Tare” (Living Together) project being funded by the European Union (EU) and supported by the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD).

She said that the event also availed the organisation the opportunity to bring stakeholders together to collectively fashion out ways of addressing issues that mostly triggered ethno-religious crisis in the state.

She said that the conference became necessary owing to the myriad of issues raised by the post graduate students of its scholarship programme.

“As you know, the Zaman Tare project is aimed at promoting Inter-Cultural Inter-Religious harmony in communities

“This event came about because of the issues raised by some of the post graduate students of our scholarship programme as part of the problems leading to ethno-religious conflict in the society.

“They raised issues like unemployment, poor education, easy access and wrong use of the social media, manipulative tendencies of religious leaders, among others

“So, we brought these women here as critical stakeholders to sensitise and also get feedback from them on ways to foster peaceful co-existence and harmony in our society, ” Magaji said.

She said that participants were drawn from Dadin Kowa Community of Jos Local Government Area of the state, saying that the NGO conducted same sensitisation for their male counterparts.
