The Academic Staff Union of univerties (ASUU) declared a two week warning strike to press home demands ranging from the Memorandum of understanding (MOU) and memorandum of action entered between ASUU and FGN since 2009 and 2013 respectively.
Part of the issues raised by the MOU ranges on the issues of Funding and revitalization of public universities, Earned academic allowances of Academic Staff , salary shortfall, and issues of proliferation of state universities and the funding issues.
Other issues include NUPEMCO ( Nigerian universities pension management company ) and arrangements of visitation panels to public universities.
As ASUU continued to press the demand above, the FGN through the AGF around October 2019 annouced the introduction of a new payment platform called IPPIS however, the union, ASUU rejected the platform and the directive of the AGF citing a number of reasons including constitutional provision guiding the operation of Public Universities.
viewpointnigeria reporter garthered that the Academic Staff in Universities have not been paid for two months as government keeps insisting on the use of IPPIS. However, ASUU had developed a new platform as alternative to IPPIS called the University Transparency and Accountability solution (UTAS ) a product of the Brain child of the Nigerian academic build in Nigeria unlike the IPPIS that ASUU accused FGN of paying so much for it’s maintainance.
VPN also gathered that the Senior Staff Union of university and non academic staff union earlier enrolled in the IPPIS platform but after payment of February salaries, the union is now facing serious problem with its members and it’s making a U-turn, saying, “No to IPPIS” …
The congress of ASUU Unijos resolved that the strike should be total, comprehensive and total. But the question that begs for urgent answers is, what happened to the students? As the Government continues to hold the salaries of ASUU members how long will this strike last? But for now, the corona virus holiday is on, if government did not settle the issues before opening the versities the struggle will continue and the tax payer will continue to pay the price.
