New dawn in Nigeria as an opposition candidate in the person of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari wins the presidential polls.

Buhari defeated the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan by over 2 million votes. This would be the first an opposition candidate is challenging and winning polls in Nigeria. It would also be Gen. Buhari’s fifth attempt at running for the lofty post.

What does this mean for Plateau, you may ask? Well, we think this may be turn out to be a challenging time for Plateau, given the antecedents of the past.

Did I hear you say “phew”? Yes indeed –like Abraham Lincoln who had to run 7 times before being successful –Muhammadu Buhari endured PDP’s rigging machine several times before finally making it into the lofty compound of Aso Rock.

What does this mean for Plateau, you may ask? Well, we think this may be turn out to be a great time for Nigeria, because Buhari will overturn the entire “broken” establishment as we currently know it, but we think it would be a very difficult time for Plateau, given his past antecedents towards Plateau people.

To exacerbate the issue, Plateau elders have not helped matters lately, they continued to taunt him during the elections, saying he should wait till 2019 and that he was inept. This all appears to have backfired. He (Buhari) may wage a war of vendetta against key Plateau stakeholders, because of their resistance to him –he may end up prosecuting several for various offences.

All said and done, congratulations to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari –we wish him good luck as he takes the helms of affairs of the nation.
