Barely a week to the first phase of the general elections, Commander of the Special Task Force (STF), responsible for the maintenance of peace in Plateau State, code named ‘Operation Safe Haven’, Major General David Enetie, has declared that the Nigerian Army will participate fully in the polls.

Enetie stated this while fielding questions from journalists shortly after addressing a parade of all the military and para-military Officers at the STF headquarters in Jos, Saturday.

He said, “The Nigerian Army will come out to play its constitutional role before, during and after the election. Our primary duty is to provide security for the country and the election is not an exception.

“We want to use this opportunity to warn whoever is planning evil over this election should have a change of mind before that day, else we have the might to crush you. We will not condone all forms of electoral fraud, if we catch you, then you have yourself to blame.

Addressing the troops earlier, the STF Commander said, “We have organized this “show of military power” to tell citizens of this state that we are fully prepared to handle any ugly situation that may arise during the election and thereafter. We want this election to be free, fair and credible.

“Nigeria is the only country we have, and we are duty bound to defend it. We have to ensure that democracy is promoted and democratic activities like elections are conduct in a peaceful manner that will not tarnish the image of the country.

“The ‘show of power’ by the armed forces and all the security agencies in this state which we start today will remain a constant exercise until after the election, so all members of the security agencies taking part in this ‘show of power tour’ should know that we are not just out to showcase our uniforms, we are to show we have the capacity to defend our fatherland at this crucial period. We should remain on alert to deliver on our responsibility as the nation’s security agency.

“Our aim is to guarantee peaceful election in Plateau state and in. Nigeria”.
