Ahead of the forthcoming general elections, the Plateau State Chapter of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ has appealed to women in the state irrespective of tribe, political and religious affiliation to encourage their spouses and children not to engage in any activity that will scuttle the relative peace being enjoyed in the State.
Chairperson of the Association, Mrs. Jennifer Yerima while addressing the women Thursday in Jos during a day seminar organized by the Association said the event is to sensitize women on the need for free, fair and peaceful elections in Nigeria.
Yerima urged the participants to remember that women bear the brunt of every crisis as they are the ones left widowed and childless as their husbands and sons get killed in crises.
“This seminar is very relevant at this moment and the importance of peace in the world today cannot be compromised. Several misfortunes of various magnitudes have befallen us as a people, lives and property have been lost.
“We are gathered here as mothers, what we need to focus on is a peaceful atmosphere that will enable us to go about our legitimate duties. Election is just few days away and the conduct of each one of us matters.
“We must ensure that the political gladiators and their supporters canvass for votes devoid of rancour. We frown at campaigns of blackmail and hatred that is capable of igniting troubles that may likely divide us.
“Mothers, let’s talk to out spouses and children to shelve their weapons of war because we suffer more when the environment is thrown into confusion. We need to caution our children against being used as thugs or hired assassins by selfish people.
The Chairperson further called on the women to ensure they get their permanent voter’s cards, PVCs so that they can exercise their franchise as responsibility citizens of the country.
However, the theme of the seminar was titled: “2015 Elections: Women, Panacea for Stable Democracy in Nigeria”, goodwill messages were received from dignitaries present and participants were drawn from Christian and Muslim Women groups in the state.
