Information available to us indicates that a survivor of the pogrom at Gashish Mr Nuhu John Gyang has been arrested by police in Jos, Plateau State.
Mr John Gyang who lost his wife (Janet Nuhu) and Son (9 years old) in the attacks at Ex-lands attack was picked up by the police earlier this afternoon on what they described as “orders from above”.
Mr Gyang who has been staying with his brother as an IDP since the attack on his family/village, granted an interview to ViewPointNigeria last week, where he narrated the ordeal of how his wife rang him, at the moment their village (Ex-lands) was surrounded by herdsmen, to make her parting words to him.
Our reporter confirmed that this afternoon, Mr Gyang while staying at his brother’s house in Dadin Kowa got a call from someone, who asked him to come to “Sparkling junction” to meet the friend. On arrival (having driven his car with his son), he rang the friend’s number, only to be arrested by plain clothes policemen who bundled him into a car to the police headquarters.
When our reporter spoke to Mr Nuhu’s brother to understand why he was arrested, his brother confirmed that a short while ago, information was released to the effect that herdsmen lodged a complaint that he (Mr Gyang) rustled their cattle. And therefore, orders from above have come calling for his immediate arrest and prosecution.
When ViewPointNigeria spoke to citizens in the area about Mr Gyang’s arrests, many expressed apprehension, alarm and disappointment at the fact that an allegation of cattle theft (which is still unproven) will lead to the arrest of Mr Gyang (who is mourning the brutal murder of his wife and son). While the attackers who have murdered his entire family still room about freely. This they say, begs a lot of questions about fairness and equity in the Nigerian system – they therefore called for his immediate release and the prosecution of all groups who have claimed responsibility for the killings in Ex-Lands.
