Due to heavy rainfall that lasted for over six hours flooded Jos East Local Government Area ravaging over 100 farmlands also washed away parts of Fobur, Angware and Rinji Angware roads presently under construction.

According to the Chairman of the Council, Samuel Atu Abok, who spoke with journalists in Jos on Saturday, Maigemu and Shere Districts of the Council were not left out of the destruction.

Abok explained that the destruction took place after a heavy downpour that washed away most of the farmlands while others were overtaken by streams and stones brought by the volume of water from rivers and mountains, thereby destroying crops like maize, vegetables and other cash crops.

The Chairman who carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the damage in the areas affected, expressed shock and deep concern over the incident.

He lamented that farmers affected are facing serious challenges, more so that the disaster occurred in the middle of the raining season, when farming activities are in high tempo.

He appealed to the National and State Emergency Agencies to come to the aid of the farmers.

The Council boss equally urged the construction firm handling the Fobur-Angware road to provide box culverts, drainages, to protect the road, so as not to prevent residents of the local government from being cut off from the township as a result of the heavy downpour.

He also advised farmers in the local government area to avoid farming close to rivers and major streams to forestall future occurrences.

Assuring that the council will look into the situation with the aim of providing succour to the affected farmers.

The Council boss said the destruction was as a result of the heavy downpour in the aforementioned areas in past few days.
