Workers of Jos North Local Government Area in Plateau State have on Tuesday protested the non-payment of their two months outstanding salaries and other entitlements.

The protest which took place in the early hours of the day saw the aggrieved workers laying siege and blocking entrance into the council secretariat. The interim Chairman of the council together with management and staff were not allowed entry into the secretariat.

A striking worker stated that they were owed two months’ salary and other entitlements while stressing that the management was showing a nonchalant attitude towards their plight. The worker said, “We are being owed November, December 2013 salaries, we are also owed entitlements of three years as well as other unpaid repatriation entitlements.”

He added “We have severally channelled our complaints, which included lack of promotion of workers through the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees but no action was taken. The council has a lot of money in its purse, but the interim chairman has said the money is for project execution. Wase LGC that also has an interim chairman has cleared all outstanding entitlements so I wonder why in Jos North we cannot be paid.”

Chairman of the Jos North NULGE, Mr. Yakubu Dung who is the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Jos North disagreed that there was a strike. He stated that workers were just gathering to be addressed by the leaders of the workers’ union.

Dung added that the council was seriously addressing the plight of the workers and that the leadership of NULGE is in dialogue with the management.
