Pictures of bomb explosion in Jos today, viewers discretion advised
News reaching ViewPointNigeria has confirmed the death toll from the twin blasts which rocked Jos city this afternoon is said to have reached approximately 200 people, with scores injured, carrying varying degrees of severity. The first explosion occured around the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) area, close to the Terminus Market near Murtala Mohammed way, in Jos city. The explosion was said to have had huge impact and could be felt as far as Bukuru which is approx. 20km away.
The second went off, not too far from the first and was positioned to inflict maximum damage. A witness was quoted as saying ‘The bombs were strategically placed and timed within minutes of each other to wreak maximum havoc -and so they did’. This would be the highest death toll in Jos as a result of Bomb explosions. It would be recalled that a few years ago, on Christmas eve a Bomb went off at the busy Gada Biu market killing up to 60. Followed by another in an Angwan Rukuba football viewing centre, during which scores were killed.
At the time of filing this report, several people were reported missing from their families -the missing people were to be mainly petty traders and market women who have plyed their trade in that area for several years. This horrific incident adds another dimension to the ever present threat that lurks in public spaces in Nigeria, especially for the common man.
An eye witness on the scene suggested that the first vehicle to explode was a Peugoet J5, while the second appeared to be a small toyota saloon vehicle parked meters away from the other vehicle.
This developed has thrown the entire state into a state of shock and confusion, as people are waking up to the reality and enormity of the threat to their lives.
An additional peice of information just reaching us suggests that 90% of the people killed were women, with approximately 50% burnt beyond recognition. All morgues in the state, including the Plateau Hospital Mortuary, Jankwano Hospital and JUTH were said to be full to capacity, with unmatched body parts put in polythene bags, in cases where victims could not be recognised.
