On this day 16 years ago, our city, the city of Jos was suddenly engulfed in a bitter and unfortunate crisis.
On that day we witnessed the worst of humanity. Neighbors turned against each other, communities against communities and the resultant carnage was simply unfathomable.
Since that 7th September 2001, our state has not remained the same.
The events of that day kick started a series of other crisis that lasted over a decade leading to needless loss of lives, wanton destruction of property, segregation of markets and settlements across ethnic and religious lines. This was further worsen by the stereotyping of our state-which was hitherto known for peace and tourism, to a home of terror and bloodshed.
All of us lost friends, family, neighbors, homes or even communities. Yet we have emerged strong. We have put the past behind us, and we are gradually overcoming the twin evils of mutual suspicion and hatred.
Our people are learning to build bridges, removing the gaps that crisis has wedged between us.
While that day will continue to live in infamy. However we must never forget. We must remember the day not as an incentive for vengeance or hatred but that never again will evil prevail in our land as it did to our society and the victims it consumed.
Let us therefore say a word of prayer for all those who have lost their lives and their families as a result of the incessant outbreak of violence recorded from 2001 to 2015.
Let’s say a word of prayer for our dear State and its leaders and above all, let’s never cease to pray for the return of durable Peace in Plateau State and beyond.
