The Plateau state governor Rt. Hon Simon Lalong has reiterated the Rescue administration’s commitment towards establishing a tax system that will incorporate every economically viable citizens in the state.
Governor Lalong disclosed this to state house correspondents Abuja Wednesday 29th June 2017 during the formal launching of the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme by acting president Professor. Yemi Osinbajo.
Governor Lalong disclosed that the state government is waiting for the legal framework which is being spearheaded by a legislation from the plateau state House of assembly in which the state is expected to witness a robust internal Revenue Generation.
Flagging of the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme, Acting President Professor Yemi Osinbajo lamented the poor tax system in Nigeria, describing it as the least in Africa at the current rate of six percent.
Professor Osinbajo revealed that of the seventy million economically viable citizens only two hundred and fourteen Nigerians pay an annual tax of above twenty million and all are from Lagos state with another estimated nine hundred paying above ten million of which only two are from Ogun state while the rest from Lagos.
Earlier in her welcome address minister for finance kemi Adeosun stated that the new tax policy will avail Nigerians to voluntarily submit their tax status without being compelled to do so.
There were goodwill messages from the governors forum through governor of zamfara Abdulaziz Yari, Representative of the Senate president among others who all pledged to support the initiative to the latter.
