Unconfirmed reports reaching the ViewPointNigeria news desks suggests that a purported commander of the Nigerian Islamic sect Boko Haram has declared unilateral ceasefire on Monday 28th January 2013. In a lengthy press statement signed by the commander, Sheik Abu Muhammed Ibn Abdulazeez and released to Journalists in Maiduguri, he stated that the organisation has declared unilateral ceasefire throughout the country, and urged its members to halt all hostilities. The statement went further to explain that the declaration of the cease fire was as a result of the severe hardship being experienced by women and children and the on-going meetings and negotiations with Government officials.

The statement came through Borno State’s journalist union -Boko Haram’s usual communication channel. It was confirmed by the union that following the receipt of the statement, Abdulazeez further telephoned to validate the statement and to confirmed that he had the consent and approval of Shekau, Boko Haram’s leader. At the time of filing this report, Shekau had not come out to denounce the press release and therefore further developments in respect of this story are expected to unfold.
