A fire outbreak on Tuesday night destroyed parts of a timber market popularly known as “Katako Market” in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. Witnesses said the fire started on Tuesday night at about 9 p.m.

The fire consumed the entire grain section of the market as fire fighters struggled to put out the fire on Wednesday morning.
The Director Fire Service, Plateau State Command, Michael Dung, who spoke in a telephone interview, described the incident as “sad” and said his officers had been deployed to the area. “When we got the news of the outbreak of fire at the market, our men immediately mobilized to the scene of the fire with six fire trucks and it took us about eight hours to put out the fire,” he said.
No death was recorded from the incident. However, some persons who tried to put out the fire before the arrival of fire service were badly injured and were taken to a nearby hospital.

The source of the fire was yet to be officially made known, but owners of shops at the market, whose property were razed, attributed the cause of the fire to a voltage surge from an electrical device. Property worth millions of naira was destroyed, the owners said. The last fire incident at the timber market occurred in 2008, burning materials worth millions of Naira.
Other items affected by Tuesday’s inferno include building materials, grains, household items, and fairly used clothes.
